INDIGO mayor James Trenery this morning officiated at the opening of Ritchies’ Beechworth IGA pop-up supermarket in Harper Avenue, praising the Beechworth community for its rapid response to a fire which gutted the firm’s Loch Street store in January.

Cr Trenery said Beechworth was well placed to cope in the wake of the fire, with support from the town’s butcher, greengrocer, bakery and other suppliers to fill the gap.

“The council put on a bus to local supermarkets and promoted local businesses to encourage people to shop locally,” the mayor said.

“One of the biggest demonstrations of the community spirit in Beechworth was the collective effort to find a new site.

“Community forums on Facebook and along the street were rich with ideas from people offering solutions.”

Mick and Jo Westra generously vacated their leasehold premises to provide space for Ritchies’ temporary store while the Loch Street site is rebuilt.
