GREAT WEB: Lorna Nash, Joan Simms and Lynne Oliver are among those who are changing minds in the project by which Beechworth is becoming a dementia-friendly community.

AN extraordinary journey that continues to foster community awareness and build opportunities in Beechworth to support people with dementia will be highlighted during September’s Dementia Awareness Month.

‘Changing Minds Beechworth’ is an innovative project that began as a pilot but which the community has adopted as its own.

It has garnered support across all elements of the community – an alliance that has enjoyed the support of Indigo Shire Council, Beechworth Health Service and allied agencies.

It ranges through education and business awareness, volunteers, carers, families and people in the street.

It has involved the library, grandparents, parents and children and is now evolving in business throughout the community.

“It’s been incredibly valuable,” says carers’ group volunteer Lorna Nash.

“It’s been building like a great web and what’s rally important for us all to know is that there is help all around the community.”

Lynne Oliver says the project encouraged people to tell their own stories.

“It’s heartening to be heard,” she says.

“Here we are hearing stories from the heart.”
