INDI remains on track to stay an ‘Independent’ federal electorate with Cathy McGowan’s anointed successor, Helen Haines, in the ‘orange’ boxed seat to officially claim a decisive victory in Saturday’s federal election.

With 81 58 per cent of the vote counted by the Australian Electoral Commission up until yesterday morning, Dr Haines was ahead of Liberal candidate Steve Martin – 45,348 votes to 42,694 – on a two candidate preferred tally.

While most of the nation had called Dr Haines’ victory in Indi on Saturday night, Mr Martin said on Monday he was awaiting the outcome of postal votes as he could mathematically still win the seat.
