Old coastal redwood felled after lightning strike

RECORDS indicate a Sequoia sempervirens known as a coastal redwood struck by lightning last Thursday morning, splitting it from top to bottom, had been planted in the grounds of the Ovens and District Hospital in 1874.

The tall specimen of the Sequoia species had grown among cedars and bunya pines planted around that time.
