Tilley calls for action over carriage collection relocation

LIBERAL MP for Benambra Bill Tilley has entered the debate over the relocation of the historic Beechworth Carriage Collection saying the current impasse must be resolved.

Mr Tilley was following up on the article in last week's Advertiser outlining the Indigo Shire Council and the National Trust's (Victoria) reasons for ruling out using the refurbished railway goods shed as a new location for the historic carriage collection currently housed by Bilson's Brewery.

"This collection is priceless and another element to the living history within Beechworth," he said.

"What I'm hearing is that the historical society were offered a shed in the industrial estate – that's not good enough."

Mr Tilley said the carriage collection should be a vibrant tourist attraction for the region, not just Beechworth.

"The question is what is the impasse?," he said.

"The council wants paying tenants for a building that has been vacant for years and something that is complementary to the precinct.

"Well, this site was a transport hub, a heritage site and here we could have a magnificent carriage collection from the colonial past that might act as a catalyst to attracting a café or other tourist businesses.

"Surely something as significant as this collection should have a home within the historic Beechworth precinct."

Indigo Shire Council said last week it would continue to look for a commercial tenant, which is was required to do by the terms of the funding arrangement, and the National Trust (Victoria) said it would continue to seek community input on any new site.
